A schoolgirl named Amena Khatun, 13, has died of a snakebite in Kalia, Narail. She died while undergoing treatment at the upazila health complex on the morning of Monday, 29 July.

She had been bitten by the snake at around 1am on Sunday night in Bahirdanga village of Salamabad union in the upazila.

Amena was the daughter of Zakir Sheikh of Bahirdanga village and a class seven student at Kalia Government Pilot Secondary School.

Her family said a snake bit her on her bed at around 1am. When the family realised, they took her to Nazmul Ojha, son of Moksed Kerani of Baburpur village in the upazila, to draw out the venom. He sent her on to Kalia Upazila Health Complex. She was admitted there around 3am and treatment began, but she died at about 6.30am on Monday.

Sanjukta Roy, the doctor on duty at Kalia Upazila Health Complex, confirmed that the schoolgirl had died of a snakebite. The family is in mourning.
