Jubo League chairman Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash held a tree-planting programme on Monday at Platinum Park, behind Police Plaza in Hatirjheel, launching the organisation's nationwide tree-planting drive.

Also taking part were AKM Rahmat Ullah, a member of the Awami League advisory council; forest and environment affairs secretary Delwar Hossain; and Jubo League general secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil.

Parash said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had inaugurated World Environment Day and the National Tree Plantation Campaign 2022 on 5 June.

"So this is not just a programme; it is a tree-planting campaign. Through today's launch, Jubo League leaders and activists will keep up the tree-planting programme in every ward, union, municipality, upazila, district and city," he said.

Many Jubo League units have already started planting trees on their own initiative, he said, and he praised them. "Now is the right time to plant trees. There is no alternative to planting trees, and so to a better natural environment, for a sustainable Bangladesh and sustainable development for the next generation."

Parash said that last year, at the Prime Minister's call, they had planted nearly one crore trees and earned praise, including about three lakh in the first 15 days alone. This year too, the central office will collect updated figures every 15 days on how many trees have been planted.
