A deep tubewell owned by three people in Kalai upazila, Joypurhat, has stopped, leaving about 200 bigha of paddy short of irrigation. A dispute among the owners is keeping it from running, it is alleged, and farmers fear crop losses, Ajker Patrika reports.
On Monday (26 October), two co-owners, Md Murshid Alam of Santar village and Md Nur Alam Sarker of Borai village, filed a written complaint with the UNO, who chairs the upazila irrigation committee, asking for the well to be restarted. The complaint says the three installed the well jointly at Borai mouza, and that the third co-owner, Salim Uddin Mondal, is keeping the electrical equipment at his home because of the dispute.
The complainants say about 200 bigha depend on the well and there is no other source of irrigation. Farmer Abdul Mottaleb said the crop could be badly damaged if water does not reach the fields on time. Farmer Munsur said a lot of money has already been spent, and without irrigation it will be wasted. Khoybar, Shafi, Khorshed, Nur Mohammad, Ajbahar, Mannan and other farmers also want the well restarted quickly.
Denying the allegation, Salim Uddin Mondal said there is some dispute over ownership, but he did not shut the well to harm farmers; he has specific reasons for keeping the equipment and is trying to settle the matter through talks.
Kalai UNO Foysal Ahmed said he has received the complaint. There may be a dispute among the owners, he said, but crop losses for farmers because of it will not be accepted, and the matter will be investigated and acted on quickly.
