Aman rice planting in Jhenaidah has passed its target this season. The fields are green, and early varieties are already ripening in places. With favourable weather and little disease, farmers expect a good yield, and villages are getting ready for the new harvest, BSS reports.

The district office of the Department of Agricultural Extension set an initial Aman target of 104,500 hectares; farmers planted another 100 hectares, bringing the total to 104,600. By upazila: Sadar 25,252 hectares, Shailkupa 24,945, Kaliganj 18,734, Maheshpur 18,155, Harinakunda 11,232 and Kotchandpur 6,182.

Mizanur Rahman of Ramnagar in Sadar upazila said the weather was good at planting and care came on time, so disease was very light; with no heavy rain or major disaster, the plants stayed healthy. Amjad Hossain, a farmer at Bhabanipur, said final care is under way, some plots have already been cut, and harvesting will start everywhere in a few weeks.

Laltu Mia of Singa village in Harinakunda said the risk of losses is low unless a sudden storm or gusts hit at the last moment. Agriculture officials say farmers should get the yield they want if the weather holds for the next few weeks, and field staff are advising smallholders on disease control and crop care.

Md Kamruzzaman, deputy director of the district extension office, said field staff worked closely with farmers from the start of the season, the weather was favourable and fertiliser supply was adequate. He expects a strong Aman yield and said Jhenaidah's rice can meet local needs and contribute to national supply.
