A section of the Jagannath University (JnU) unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal held a tree-planting programme at the university to mark the 44th death anniversary of former president Shaheed Ziaur Rahman.

Leaders and activists of the organisation planted fruit and other saplings on campus on Saturday (31 May). They said the programme was organised on the instructions of the party's acting chairman Tarique Rahman and out of environment-friendly thinking.

JnU Chhatra Dal joint convener Suman Sardar said planting a sapling means leaving something for future generations. Inspired by the ideals of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, they are working to protect the balance of the environment. Politics should be for the good of people, and that is the goal they work for, he said.

Joint convener Sakhawatul Islam Khan Parag said politics is not limited to processions or slogans. Because they want to do something real for society and the future, they made this small effort by planting trees. It may be a small initiative, but this is where the seed of change lies, he said.

Moniruzzaman Monir, a member of the unit's convening committee, said Shaheed Zia's ideals are the source of their moral strength. By planting trees on the anniversary they did not only pay tribute but also sowed a sense of responsibility among students, he said.

Present at the programme were JnU Chhatra Dal joint conveners Nasiruddin Sourav, Faruk Rana, Ariful Islam Arif, Yasir Arafat, Raihan Hossain Apu, Robin Mia Shawon and Mehedi Hasan.

Also taking part were Chhatra Dal members Mehedi Hasan Emon, Sajib Ahsan, Mashfiqul Islam Rain, Mithu Ali, Redwan Chowdhury, Tanvir Evan and Mahmudul Hasan Naim, and activists Ashraful Islam, Soirav Ahmed, Akram Khan, Abu Huraira Mobashwer and Shahrul.
