Torches have been distributed to members of the Elephant Response Team (ERT) and fuel oil to local people in Jhenaigati, a border upazila of Sherpur, to help drive away wild elephants. Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Ashraful Alam Rasel handed over the items at the Rangtia range office on the afternoon of 15 April, in an initiative of the upazila administration.

The UNO said villages on the edge of the forest face a high risk of wild elephant attacks at night. The items were given to ERT members and locals who help drive the elephants away, to tackle the situation and reduce the loss of life and property.

Present at the event were Rangtia range assistant conservator of forests S B Tanvir Ahmed Emon, range officer Abdul Karim, Taoakucha beat officer Ifaz Morshed Shahin and union parishad member Golam Kibria, among many others.
