A 14-year-old boy, Arafat Hossain, has died of a snakebite in Jhenaidah. A venomous snake bit him in his sleep late on Monday night, 10 August.

Jhenaidah 250-bed General Hospital and the Sadar police station confirmed the death on Tuesday morning, 11 August.

Arafat was the son of Hannan Musalli of Taltala para in Ghorshal union of Sadar upazila, and a class six pupil at Ghorshal madrasa.

Relatives and locals said Arafat was sleeping in his room when a venomous snake bit him at around 11.30pm. When the family realised what had happened, they took him to a local ojha (traditional healer). After they returned home, his condition worsened at around 3am.

The family then set out for Jhenaidah 250-bed General Hospital, but he died on the way.

Md Asaduzzaman, officer-in-charge of Jhenaidah Sadar police station, said the police had not received any such report but would look into it and complete the legal process. An unnatural death case is usually filed in such incidents, he said.
