Mikail Hossain, 18, was sleeping peacefully under a mosquito net when a venomous snake bit him before dawn. He was taken to hospital seriously ill but could not be saved and died during treatment.

The incident happened before dawn on 5 September in Kuthidurgapur village of Sadar upazila. Mikail was the son of Asadul Mondal of the village.

Locals said Mikail was asleep in his room when the snake bit him. When he felt unwell, his family took him to the 250-bed Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital, where he died during treatment.

Dr Rajib Chakraborty of the hospital's emergency department said the patient could not be saved even though antivenom was given after he reached hospital. This might not have happened if he had reached hospital sooner, he said.

Md Asaduzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Jhenaidah Sadar police station, said the family had made no complaint. The body was handed over to the family after relatives submitted a no-objection, and an unnatural death case will be filed.
