A Russell's viper has been caught in a fish trap in Maheshpur, Jhenaidah. The snake was caught at noon on Thursday (27 June) in the Ichamati river, on the Indian border, in the upazila's Pepulbaria area.

Locals said a farmer named Ujjal Hossain had set a bamboo trap in the river to catch fish. When he went to the river at noon, he found a snake stuck inside the trap. They then took the snake out and brought it home. Forest department officials later came and confirmed that it was a venomous Russell's viper.

District forest officer Khandaker Gias Uddin said a Russell's viper had been caught in a farmer's fish trap in Maheshpur. The snake was three and a half feet long. On Friday morning a special team from Khulna came and took the snake away, he said.
