A venomous snake entered the hostel of a residential school and bit four schoolgirls, killing a 13-year-old. The other three girls are in hospital with serious injuries. The tragedy happened recently in Lohardaga district of Jharkhand, India.
It happened on the night of 7 July at Sanvasira Higher Secondary Residential School in the Rocho Mahuatoli area of the district. The snake was a krait.
Four girls bitten in their sleep
According to police and the school authorities, the girls had gone to sleep in their hostel room after dinner. At about 11pm a krait entered the room and first bit a student named Barsha Oraon.
Barsha's screams woke the other girls, but before anyone understood what was happening, the snake bit three more students one after another: Anisha Oraon, Manisha Kumari and Phulmoni Oraon.
Hearing the screams, teachers rushed to the room and took all four girls to Lohardaga Sadar Hospital that night, where doctors on duty declared Barsha dead.
Of the other three, Phulmoni was in critical condition and was sent to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi for better treatment. The other two are being treated at Lohardaga Sadar Hospital. The incident has caused great fear in the whole area.
