A six-year-old child has died of a snakebite in Sharsha, Jashore. The girl died under treatment at the Khulna 250-bed hospital on the afternoon of Saturday (29 June).

Her name was Pranti Khatun, the younger daughter of Sohag Mia, an expatriate worker, of Ekjhala village in Nizampur union of the upazila. Pranti was a class one pupil at the local SM Gatipara Government Primary School.

Citing the child's relatives, Nizampur Union Parishad chairman Selim Reza Bipul said Pranti was sitting by the bed at home at around 12 midnight on Friday when a snake bit her hand. Family members rushed in at her screams. They tied a band above the wound and took her first to Sharsha Upazila Health Complex, then to the Jashore 250-bed hospital, and then to the Khulna 250-bed General Hospital, where she died under treatment around Saturday afternoon.

"The little girl died of a snakebite. It is very sad," chairman Bipul said. "Along with grief, fear of snakes has spread among the people of the area. Snakes have become more of a menace here. I urge everyone to be careful."
