Unknown people have cut down trees in a farmer's 25-katha (1.25 bigha) guava orchard in Chaugachha, Jashore, and stolen about 5-7 maunds of guavas from it.

The incident happened some time on the night of Wednesday (18 November) in the orchard of farmer Md Rezaul Karim of Bhadra village in the upazila's Dhuliani union.

Rezaul Karim said: "On Thursday afternoon I was working on another plot when a man from our village told me someone had cut down the trees in my guava orchard. When I got there I saw about 5-7 maunds of guavas were gone. Forty guava trees and one jujube (kul) tree had been cut down and left lying there."

He said the trees were two to two and a half years old and it was now the time for them to bear fruit, so cutting them down has caused him a huge loss.

"I have no personal dispute with anyone," he said.

Rifat Khan Rajib, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chaugachha police station, said: "We have not yet received any complaint about this. If we get one, we will investigate and take action."
