The upazila administration in Keshabpur, Jashore, has removed illegal bamboo fences and nets that fishermen had set across the Kata canal at Komorpur, where Padma beel and Morshina beel meet. After Tuesday afternoon's drive the water began to drain and about 600 bighas of flooded aman paddy were saved.

The upazila agriculture office and local people said Sunday's and Monday's rain had submerged aman fields in Satbaria, Koriakhali, Begumpur, Jahanpur and Padma beels. The water normally drains through the Kata canal into the Harihar river, but some fishermen had blocked its mouth with bamboo fences and nets.

After farmers complained, senior upazila fisheries officer Sudip Biswas led Ansar-VDP members on a drive on the orders of UNO Anwar Hossain. About 4,000 metres of banned China duari nets were seized from eight spots in Padma and Morshina beels and destroyed.

Farmer Zakaria of Natun Mulgram had five bighas under water and Abdus Samad of Jahanpur four. Abdus Samad said the farmers' drowned paddy was saved once the administration removed the fences and nets.

Sub-assistant agriculture officer Shuvonkar Moral said that with the water drained so quickly the aman would suffer no further damage.
