Japan's famous Sun Egg (Miyazaki) mangoes are hanging on a farm in Abhaynagar upazila of Jashore. Farm owner Asadur Rahman is delighted at his success with what is described as the world's most expensive mango.

The red Sun Egg (Miyazaki) mangoes hang from trees at "Darul Asad Khamarbari" beside the Sarkhola–Moshiahati road in Dumurtala village of Chalishia union in Abhaynagar upazila. The farm's owner is Md Asadur Rahman, son of the late Sirajul Islam of Guakhola village.

A visit to Darul Asad Khamarbari found Miyazaki mango trees planted in rows on the embankment between two fish enclosures. The trees are not very big, but colourful mangoes hang from stalk after stalk.

Asadur Rahman said: "After seeing newspaper reports, I decided to plant saplings of the world's most expensive mango commercially. In July 2024, 65 saplings were imported from India. Each sapling cost Tk 4,200 to bring in. Now 23 trees have fruit, and the remaining trees are starting to fruit too. This season I hope to sell at least Tk 5 lakh worth of mangoes at Tk 1,000 a kg."

Japan's famous Miyazaki (Sun Egg) mango is said to have 15 per cent more flavour, aroma and sweetness than other mangoes, and its colour is also unusual. These qualities make the rare Miyazaki the world's most expensive mango. A single mango can weigh up to a kilogram. It is named after the place, Miyazaki, and above all it is famous for its price, being by that measure the most valuable mango on earth.

The Sun Egg, or Miyazaki, mango is a Japanese mango known on the international market as the "red mango". The Japanese name "Taiyo no Tamago" means egg of the sun: the mango is shaped much like a hen's egg and, being red, was given that name. Because it is grown in Miyazaki in Japan, many also call it the Miyazaki mango.

Abhaynagar upazila agriculture officer Lovely Khatun said: "Farmer Asadur Rahman is the first in Jashore district to start growing Miyazaki mangoes commercially. I have visited his farm and inspected the orchard myself. The yield is good. I hope he will succeed. The agriculture office is ready to give entrepreneurs like him every kind of help, including technical advice."
