Jamuna Fertilizer Company Limited in Sarishabari upazila, Jamalpur, resumed urea production at about 3am on Monday after nearly eight months idle for lack of gas. Two days later, at about 3:30am on Wednesday, 7 October, a leak was found in a boiler and urea production stopped again.

Gas supply to one of the country's largest fertiliser factories was cut on 15 February this year. Factory sources say the plant makes about 1,700 tonnes of granular urea a day, supplied to 19 districts in its command area, including Jamalpur, Sherpur, Mymensingh and Tangail.

Deputy general manager (admin) Delwar Hossain confirmed the shutdown. Everything else at the plant is running and ammonia production continues, he said; the boiler has a minor problem that he hopes will be fixed within one to two days.
