Rangpur is now growing sagar bananas in large quantities. Planting has doubled in a few years in Sadar, Mithapukur, Pirgachha and Pirganj upazilas. Wholesalers from Dhaka, Chattogram and other districts come to buy, and the trade has livened up the village economy.

Prothom Alo photographer Moinul Islam took the pictures at Shyampur in Badarganj upazila. Every plant carries a heavy bunch, propped up with bamboo stakes so its weight does not snap the stem.

Labourers cut the bunches and carry them out of the orchard on their shoulders while a wholesaler keeps count. Banana leaves are spread over the fruit loaded on rickshaw vans so it does not get marked.

Rows of vans take the bananas to a temporary depot, where they are unloaded and then loaded onto trucks bound for Dhaka and other districts.
