A mobile court has fined Jamuna Textile Limited Tk 1 lakh for polluting the environment in Shahjadpur, Sirajganj. The Department of Environment carried out the drive at Moshipur in Garadah union on Tuesday afternoon, 29 September.

It was led by Shahjadpur executive magistrate and assistant commissioner (land) Md Faridul Islam, with Department of Environment inspector Md Shahin Alam as prosecutor.

Mobile court sources said the factory's effluent treatment plant (ETP) is too small for the liquid waste it produces, so untreated effluent was being released into the environment. A bypass line used to discharge the waste was removed during the drive.

Besides the fine, the company gave a written undertaking to enlarge, repair and run the ETP within four months. If it fails to do so, legal action will be taken against the factory, officials said.

The authorities said such drives and regular monitoring to protect the environment and control pollution will continue. Police from Shahjadpur station assisted.
