A worker named Joynal Abedin has been killed in a wild elephant attack in Bakshiganj, Jamalpur.

His body was recovered on Saturday afternoon (27 June) from Bagichatila in the Dumurtola beat, in the Somnathpara area of the upazila.

Joynal Abedin, 69, was the son of the late Md Anis Mia of Mridhapara in Kamalpur union, Bakshiganj.

According to local residents and the forest department, Joynal went into the reserved forest of the Dumurtola beat in the Balijuri range on Friday to collect firewood. After going to the orchard area of the wildlife corridor next to pillars 1088 and 1089, he did not return home. On Saturday morning his relatives reported him missing to the Dumurtola beat. The forest department and members of four elephant response teams (ERT) from Dighalkona, Somnathpara, Sataniipara and Garamara then began a joint search, and at noon his body was recovered from the reserved forest area known as Bagichatila.

Sumon Mia, range officer of the Balijuri range of the Mymensingh Forest Department, said: "As soon as we got news that Joynal Abedin was missing, we began a search. His body was later recovered from the reserved forest area called Bagichatila. From the body, it is thought that he died in an elephant attack. The body has been handed over to his family."
