A monocled cobra (khoiya gokhra) about five and a half feet long and weighing five kilograms has been rescued from the Jahangirnagar University (JU) area.

The wildlife and environmental organisation Deep Ecology and Snake Conservation Foundation rescued the snake at around 9pm on Monday, 13 July, in front of a staff quarter in the university's Bishmile area.

The organisation said another snake had earlier been rescued from Islamnagar, next to the university.

Syeda Ananya Faria, general secretary of the organisation's Jahangirnagar University unit, said they learned of the snake through a phone call from an official of the university's estate branch. The group's rescue team reached the spot quickly and found the snake caught in a net. They then rescued it unharmed.

Ananya Faria said the rescued monocled cobra was about five and a half feet long and weighed more than five kilograms. It is thought that the snake came into the settlement in search of safe shelter after recent continuous rain flooded its natural habitat.
