Jagannath University's (JnU) Department of Land Management and Law has taken an unusual step for assignment marks. Amid the severe heatwave across the country, the department's students have been told to plant trees for their assignment marks. In other words, plant a tree and earn the marks.

The unusual instruction was given as an assignment for the department's "Land Use and Natural Resource Law" course by the course teacher, Dr Sharmin Akhter, associate professor and chairman of the department.

To get the course's assignment marks, each student must plant a tree before the coming Eid-ul-Azha and send a photo of the tree they planted.

Dr Sharmin Akhter said: "As it is related to the course, I gave this instruction to encourage students to be sensitive to the environment and to plant trees. It will awaken students' affection for the environment, and they will be inspired by love of their country."

Sumona Akter, a master's student in the department, said: "With the heatwave now sweeping the country because of climate change, the time has come for us to take up various programmes to counter it. At such a time, ma'am has told us to plant trees for the marks set for class performance. We were delighted to hear it, because in the current weather and climate there is an urgent need for tree planting, and this step is a fine start."
