The Jagannath University (JnU) unit of Chhatra Dal held a tree-planting programme to mark International Environment Day.

The planting on Thursday, 5 June, was part of a programme announced by the central committee of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.

Leaders and activists planted trees at various spots on the campus. They also pledged to spread awareness about protecting the environment and renewed their commitment to social responsibility.

They said the JnU Chhatra Dal had taken part in various social and environment-friendly programmes in the past. In their view, such events show that Chhatra Dal is not only a vehicle for political movements but also active in raising social awareness.

Unit convener Mehedi Hasan Himel said: "Chhatra Dal plays a leading role not only in the struggle for political rights but in every humane and progressive initiative in national life. Protecting the environment is an urgent issue today. We believe a green revolution can be the foundation of tomorrow's Bangladesh."

He added: "The main aim of today's programme is to take a stand against environmental destruction and raise public awareness. We want every one of our activists to spread this message from where they are."
