Growers of Island Agro Farm are succeeding with a high-yielding hybrid papaya at Algar Tek and Dakshin Ghagra in Kapasia, Gazipur. They say it can bring three to four times the profit of ordinary varieties.
Teacher and entrepreneur Md Nazmul Alam Sohag said six friends have grown the variety for three years. About 800 trees were planted this season at a cost of Tk 180,000 to Tk 200,000, and they expect to sell Tk 7 to 8 lakh worth of papaya.
Entrepreneur Mostahin Billah Golzar said a group of teachers and salaried workers leased 16 bighas in 2018 and began planned cultivation. After natural disasters and the Covid setback, the whole orchard is now heavy with fruit, and 40 to 45 tonnes are expected from the 800 trees, an average of 50 to 60 kg a tree.
Agricultural researchers say the variety bears about a month earlier than ordinary papaya: fruit sets three to three-and-a-half months after planting and can be picked at four to four-and-a-half months. Each papaya weighs two to two-and-a-half kg on average and can be sold green or ripe.
