Two thousand palm saplings have been planted in the Ishwardi EPZ area of Pabna to help protect against lightning. The Bangladesh Sugarcrop Research Institute planted the saplings at the EPZ on Sunday (16 July).

To mark the occasion, a farmers' rally on the importance of palm trees in protecting against lightning and their economic potential was held on the EPZ premises.

Bangladesh Sugarcrop Research Institute Director General Omar Ali was chief guest. The rally was chaired by Ishwardi EPZ Executive Director Md Anisur Rahman, and was addressed by institute officials Kohinur Begum and Tofael Ahmed and project director Saiyum Hossain.

Saplings and palm-leaf fans were then distributed to students of the Ishwardi BEPZA school.

EPZ officials present included Director (Commercial Operations and Industrial Relations) Khaled Mahmud, Deputy Director (Accounts) Alok Kumar Adhikari, Executive Engineer (Electrical) Md Ilias, Executive Engineer (Civil) Abdul Kader Jilani and Assistant Director (Commercial Operations) Md Borhan Uddin.
