A legal notice has been sent to the authorities concerned seeking criminal action against those responsible for killing eight puppies by stuffing them in a sack and drowning them in a pond, without their mother's knowledge, on the Ishwardi upazila parishad premises in Pabna.

The notice names the Ishwardi upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) and the upazila livestock officer as respondents. Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Sajib Mahmud Alam sent it on Tuesday 2 December.

He said no action had yet been taken against the culprits for drowning the eight puppies in a sack in a pond, which was why he had sent the legal notice.

On Monday 1 December in Ishwardi, the eight puppies were put in a sack and thrown into the upazila parishad pond by Nishi Begum, wife of Hasanur Rahman Nayan, an official of the Khudra Krishak (small farmers') Foundation who lives in the upazila parishad residential building. When the incident spread on social media, it caused widespread anger, and netizens demanded that those involved be brought to justice.

After the incident, the upazila administration served notice on the accused official, Hasanur Rahman Nayan, and his wife, named here as Nishi Khatun, to vacate the upazila parishad residential building. They left the building on Tuesday 2 December after receiving the notice.

Upazila livestock officer Aklima Khatun said, "After the incident came to light, representatives of an organisation called 'Animal Welfare' set out from Dhaka for Ishwardi. They initially told us they are coming here to take legal action. They will meet the UNO after arriving in Ishwardi and then announce their decision."
