September 2026 was provisionally the second-warmest September on record in Ireland, with an average temperature of 15.22C, behind only 2021's 15.27C, according to Met Eireann's climate statement, Agriland reports. That was 1.62C above the 1991-2020 average and 2.29C above the 1961-1990 average.
Six of the 10 warmest Septembers on record have occurred since 2001, and none of the 10 coolest. Eight stations, including Shannon Airport, recorded their warmest September, among them Phoenix Park and Dublin Airport, whose records go back 127 and 84 years. The highest temperature was 25.2C at Phoenix Park on 14 September, and no air frost was reported.
It was also wetter and duller than average in most places, with a mild Atlantic airflow bringing frequent rain or showers. Most rainfall totals were above the long-term average, from 99 percent at Shannon Airport to 163 percent at Oak Park in Carlow, which also had the highest daily total, 38.6mm on 27 September. Rain fell on 17 to 28 days depending on the station.
Gales were reported on four days. The highest gust was 104km/h at Valentia Observatory in County Kerry on 29 September, and eight stations recorded their highest mean September wind speed since 2011.
