A new technology, the in-pond raceway system (IPRS), has come to fish farming in Bangladesh, Shykh Seraj reports. Chapainawabganj businessman Akbar Hossain has built a large fish farming project that creates a river-like environment in ponds, showing from the dry Barind region the success of modern technology for large-scale, high-density fish farming.
From ponds to "rivers"
Fish farming moved from ponds into buildings and then from buildings to yards and back to ponds; now the pond is becoming a river, and the "fish factory" is taking the shape of a large industrial enterprise. An in-pond raceway system fish farming project has been built on 60 bighas of water in the Barind region, and the entrepreneur has reached full results within two years.
How it works
- Thirteen IPRS channels on one bigha create a river current.
- The remaining 59 bighas are used for fish farming.
- The 60 bighas will produce as much fish as an ordinary 600 bighas of water.
The technology could suit large investors, the report says, and the fisheries department is also observing this first project to understand the new economics of fish farming.
