Indore, a city in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, has set a Guinness World Record by planting more than 11 lakh saplings in a single day. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said Indore had already earned the title of India's cleanest city, and has now also set a world record for planting more than 11 lakh saplings in one day. The planting was organised by the state government.

Sharing the Guinness World Records certificate and photos in a social media post, Mohan Yadav said Indore was now number one in the world. "I congratulate all my brothers and sisters of Indore for creating history in tree planting after cleanliness," he said.

Earlier, Union Home Minister Amit Shah took part in the planting programme and planted a sapling. Before Indore, the record for the most saplings planted in a day belonged to Assam, where 9 lakh 26 thousand saplings had been planted in one day.

On 5 June, World Environment Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi promoted the tree-planting campaign, under which an estimated 140 crore saplings will be planted across India. Of these, 5.5 crore will be planted in Madhya Pradesh, which Amit Shah has called India's "lungs".

Indore, the economic capital of Madhya Pradesh, has been recognised as India's cleanest city for the past several years. Officials said 51 lakh saplings would be planted in the city.

Officials said 2,000 BSF jawans, more than a hundred NRIs, NCC cadets from 50 schools, several thousand local residents and various social organisations took part in the planting.

Amit Shah said long-lived trees such as banyan and neem had been planted, along with trees with medicinal properties such as guava, madhukamini, karanda, bel and amla.
