The body of a woman in Indonesia has been recovered from inside a giant snake a day after she went missing. The incident took place in Parsipan Lawela on Muna Island in Indonesia's Sulawesi region.

According to a report by the Indian outlet NDTV, the 54-year-old woman, named Wa Tiba, went missing on the night of Thursday, 6 June. Her relatives and local residents then launched a search.

On Friday people spotted a huge python near the place from which Tiba had disappeared. Many suspected the snake had swallowed her, and the python was tracked down.

Local police chief Hamka said that when the woman did not return from her garden on Thursday night, about a hundred people, including her family, started looking for her. Suspecting the snake had swallowed her, the villagers killed it and carried it out of the garden. When they cut open its belly, Wa Tiba's body was indeed inside.

Hamka said the villagers had found the giant snake lying on Tiba's shoes and other belongings. The snake had swallowed her head first, so apart from the head the rest of the body was intact.

The area where Tiba disappeared is rocky and full of caves, and is known as a habitat for various snake species. Pythons about six metres long are seen there.

Such giant pythons are found in Indonesia and the Philippines. They usually attack small animals, and human deaths from this species are rarely heard of. However, in March last year a farmer fell victim to a python in Salubiro village in Sulawesi.
