India's FSSAI moves to stop 'analogue' products being sold as paneer

India's food regulator FSSAI has proposed rules barring imitation 'analogue' products made with vegetable oils, proteins or fats from being sold as paneer; eight states including Karnataka, Gujarat and Maharashtra already ban such sales, Indian Express Bangla reports.

Imitation 'analogue' products made with vegetable oils, proteins or fats instead of dairy may no longer be sold as paneer in shops or restaurants under stricter rules proposed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Indian Express Bangla reports.

The report says the regulator acted after a well-known Mumbai restaurant was found serving fake paneer last year and the incident went viral on social media. Eight states, including Karnataka, Gujarat and Maharashtra, have already banned the sale of such products, and the rules are now set to tighten nationwide.

Under FSSAI guidelines, genuine paneer must be made only from milk and milk solids. A little salt or spice for flavour, or a natural acid to curdle the milk, is allowed, but no added vegetable oil, processed fat or artificial protein.

Under the proposed rules, everything from restaurant menus to product labels must state clearly whether a product is real paneer, so that buyers know what they are eating.
