With demand for and supply of seasonal fruit running high, both prices and sales of imported fruit are falling. Depending on the area, their prices have dropped by about Tk 20 to 30 a kg.

That was the picture in the markets of Rampura, Banasree, Khilgaon and Shantinagar in the capital on Friday, 20 June, where supplies of local fruit were plentiful.

Gala apples are selling at Tk 290 to 300 a kg, down from Tk 320. Green apples sell at Tk 300 a kg, against Tk 330 to 350 earlier. Pears are Tk 300 to 320 a kg, down from Tk 350. Malta sells at Tk 280 to 300 a kg, against Tk 300 to 320 before.

Red grapes, however, have not become cheaper and sell at Tk 550 to 600 a kg.

Khilgaon fruit seller Billal Mia told Jago News that with seasonal fruit in good supply, people are buying less imported fruit. Although prices of apples, grapes, malta and other foreign fruit have eased a little, sales are not what they were.

He said mangoes, lychees, jamun and jackfruit are now selling most, at normal prices, but mango prices will rise in a few days.

Shantinagar fruit seller Abul Kalam told Jago News that foreign fruit prices and sales dip a little at this time every year. "At this time we stock more local fruit than foreign fruit. Seasonal fruit is not available all year round," he said.
