Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Benazir Ahmed has said that no extortion of any kind in the transport of sacrificial animals will be tolerated. He sent a strong message to police officers to stay vigilant and alert on this.

The IGP said this at a crime review meeting at the Police Auditorium in Rajarbagh in the capital on Wednesday afternoon (6 July).

Addressing police members, he said vehicles carrying sacrificial animals must not be stopped or checked without a specific reason. He ordered police in uniform and in plain clothes to be deployed at cattle markets.

The IGP said Eid journeys must be made smooth, and vehicles such as nasimon and bhotbhoti would be barred from highways. Dr Benazir Ahmed also told field-level officers to enforce government instructions on long-distance motorcycle travel.

The police chief said supervision of case investigations must be increased and investigations completed as quickly as possible.

In line with the prime minister's directive, the IGP urged police officers to grow crops on unused police land and farm fish in its water bodies.

The meeting was attended by additional IGPs of Bangladesh Police, DIGs of all ranges, commissioners of metropolitan police, district superintendents of police and heads of other units.

On the first day of the meeting (5 July), Additional IG (Crime and Operations) M Khurshid Hossain gave the welcome speech. DIG (Crime Management) AYM Belalur Rahman then presented the overall picture of crime, including murder, dacoity, robbery, theft and mugging, for April-June this year.

The meeting was told that dacoity cases fell in April-June 2022 compared with January-March, as did cases of murder, rape and violence against women and children. On the second day, AKM Shahidur Rahman, DIG of the Telecom and Information Management (T&IM) unit, gave a presentation on an integrated communication system with all police units.
