The Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB), Dhaka Centre, has observed a "Hundred Trees for Mujib Centenary" programme. The event was held at the IEB auditorium on the afternoon of Tuesday, 15 June, following health guidelines.

It was chaired by IEB Dhaka Centre vice-chairman Engineer Habib Ahmed Halim Murad and conducted by IEB Dhaka Centre secretary Engineer Kazi Khairul Bashar.

Deputy Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Habibun Nahar was chief guest. Special guests were Bangladesh Awami League science and technology affairs secretary Engineer Md Abdus Sabur, IEB general secretary Engineer Md Shahadat Hossain (Shiblu) and IEB vice-president Engineer Nuruzzaman.

Also present as honoured guests were IEB vice-president Engineer Khandaker Manjur Morshed, Engineer Mohammad Hossain and Engineer MM Manjurul Haque Manju, among others.

Speaking at the discussion, Deputy Minister Habibun Nahar said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman understood the importance of the environment 50 years ago, and his daughter Sheikh Hasina is working to build the Golden Bengal of his dreams. She is not only conserving the environment but taking it further, she said.

Urging engineers to give importance to the environment alongside development, she said: "An engineer is often satisfied on finishing a project, but against your satisfaction our forest officials have to weep, because many trees are felled for development projects. Importance of the environment has grown now, though. Through this event you will be further inspired to plant trees against tree felling, and to give importance to the environment along with development."

Awami League science and technology affairs secretary Engineer Md Abdus Sabur said the threat of global climate change is ours too, which is why the daughter of Bangabandhu has given special importance to afforestation and is making green Bengal even greener. He called for a social movement to tackle the environment's adverse effects.

Earlier, Deputy Minister Habibun Nahar, together with the guests, planted one fruit, one forest and one medicinal sapling on the premises of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh.
