Hy-Line Brown Hens, a Ray of Hope for Young Entrepreneurs

The Hy-Line Brown layer, with high egg output and tolerance of Bangladesh's climate, has become a first choice for young poultry farmers.

Crops

In Bangladesh's economy, the poultry industry has opened new horizons through young entrepreneurs. Many young people are taking it up as a profession to escape unemployment and become financially independent. Poultry farming is growing fast in popularity because it can be started with relatively little capital and turn a profit in a short time. The Hy-Line Brown hen is playing the most effective role here. Because it adapts easily to Bangladesh's weather and lays many eggs, it has become the first choice of farmers, especially the young.

Hy-Line Brown is a crossbred layer developed specifically for egg production and is considered a game-changer in Bangladesh's poultry industry. Sakib Iftekhar Islam, a final-year undergraduate student in the Faculty of Animal Husbandry at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), explained the breed's availability, farming and prospects in Bangladesh.

Why the breed stands out

High egg production: a Hy-Line Brown hen can lay 468 to 473 eggs in a 100-week production cycle, or more than five eggs a week on average. Its laying rate reaches as high as 96 per cent, which is very profitable for commercial farming.

Feed conversion: the breed's feed conversion ratio is between 1.9 and 2.1, better than other layer breeds. That means it gains 1 kg of weight from about 2 kg of feed, which helps cut costs and raise profit.

Climate tolerance: Hy-Line Brown adapts easily to Bangladesh's hot and humid climate, making it suitable for rearing in different regions of the country.

Egg quality: the eggs are brown, which are more popular than white eggs in Bangladesh's market and fetch a better price. The shells are hard and durable, reducing the risk of damage in transport. At 38 weeks of age, the internal quality of the eggs exceeds 90 Haugh units, an indicator of high-quality eggs.

Where to get Hy-Line Brown

Day-old Hy-Line Brown chicks are easy to find in Bangladesh, usually for Tk 60 to 80 each. They can be obtained from district and upazila livestock offices. Established private companies such as Kazi Farms, Paragon and Nourish are also reliable sources, and these firms often provide training and advice, which is especially helpful for new entrepreneurs.

Tips for success

Some important points must be kept in mind when setting up a Hy-Line Brown farm. First, the farm should be sited where there is enough ventilation and sunlight. Second, cages or sheds must be built in a clean, disinfected environment. Third, a balanced diet must be ensured so that there is no shortage of protein, vitamins and minerals. Regular vaccination and disease prevention on a veterinarian's advice are also essential.

Prospects for young entrepreneurs

Starting a Hy-Line Brown farm can be a profitable venture for young entrepreneurs. The breed not only ensures high egg production, but demand and prices for its eggs in Bangladesh are also satisfactory. Young people can explore export prospects as well as the local market. Government incentives for poultry, such as loans, training programmes and technical support, are also easing the way for newcomers.

Challenges and solutions

There are also challenges on the road to success in poultry, such as rising feed prices, disease outbreaks and fluctuating market prices. To tackle them, entrepreneurs need training, modern technology and planning based on market analysis. Keeping in touch with local poultry associations also brings accurate market information and support.

In short, the poultry industry not only ensures personal financial independence but also contributes significantly to the economy and food security. So if you want to become a young entrepreneur and stand on your own feet, Hy-Line Brown layer farming could be a great tool for fulfilling your dream.
