Md Redwan Mollah is a highly educated young man who passed Fazil from a madrasa. After finishing his studies he turned to farming and has found success, growing cucumber on fallow land beside his home. With cucumber fetching good prices this season, he is making a profit.
Redwan Mollah lives in the Mollabari area of Hossainpur municipality in Kishoreganj. This season he grew cucumber on 26 decimals of land. His success with vegetables has also inspired unemployed young people in the area to dream of becoming self-reliant.
Cucumber at Tk 50-60 a kg
Redwan used to help his father with farm work in between his studies, and that is how he became interested in agriculture. This season he planted a hybrid cucumber variety on 26 decimals next to his home. Cucumber is currently selling at Tk 50-60 a kg in the market, and at Tk 1,600-1,800 a maund wholesale. He expects to sell cucumbers worth Tk 1.5 lakh to over Tk 2 lakh.
"A few years ago I took two training courses on agriculture. Since then I have grown seedless lemon and aubergine. Now I have taken up a cucumber project. Every two or three days I can harvest 7 to 8 maunds of cucumber. So far about 150 maunds have been sold. I want to work on a larger scale in future," Redwan Mollah said.
A father's change of heart
His father, Jalal Uddin Mollah, said: "Every parent wishes that a son who studies will get a good job. When my son started farming instead of chasing a job, I was upset at first, but now I am happy. My son is a successful entrepreneur. He has changed the idea that money can only be earned from a job."
Local farmer Morjot Ali said: "I have been growing cucumber for two years and often come to him for advice. Seeing him, we too have turned to farming. He is highly educated, and his farming instead of taking a job encourages us."
Upazila agriculture officer AKM Shahjahan Kabir said: "The agriculture office is constantly advising farmers in the field. Now, along with ordinary farmers, highly educated young people like Redwan Mollah are turning to farming, which will play a big role in taking the country's agriculture forward."
