A large dead whale has washed up on the waves at the deserted Himchhari point in Cox's Bazar. The cause of its death has not yet been established.

Local businessman Abdur Shukkur said local people saw the whale floating in the sea at 1pm on Friday (9 April). When they went closer, they found it was dead.

He said the whale had a large wound on the rear part of its body, and it is thought to have died from this injury. Local people believe it was killed by hunters somewhere in the deep sea and then drifted to the shore after dying.

Samir Kumar Saha, officer of the Sadar range of the Cox's Bazar South Forest Division, said local forest staff and the managers of the Himchhari tourist spot went to the scene on hearing that a huge sea creature had washed up on Himchhari beach, a tourist spot of the South Forest Division. "It is a whale. It is thought to have died long ago, because none of its innards remain," he said.

He said veterinary surgeons and administration officials were on their way to the spot to find out the cause of death.

During last year's lockdown, several dead dolphins also washed up on the beach, a number of which had been killed by hunters.
