Every upazila health complex in Bangladesh is to be expanded from 50 to 151 beds, health and family welfare minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain said, according to Our Islam. He expects this to widen care at upazila level and ease some of the pressure on hospitals in Dhaka.
The minister was speaking on the morning of Wednesday, 30 September at a World Heart Day seminar at the National Heart Foundation Hospital in Mirpur, Dhaka. Alongside infrastructure, the government is prioritising staff, he said: nurse recruitment has begun nationwide and police verification is under way.
To make kidney care easier to reach, 10 dialysis machines are to be installed in each district-level hospital and 50 in each medical college hospital, the minister said.
He voiced concern that HIV and AIDS cases are rising in the country, announced a Tk 5 million grant to the National Heart Foundation within two months, and described this year's health budget as the largest yet.
