A doctor couple on the bank of Hatirjheel has created a lovely rooftop farm that blends with the beauty of the lake. They say that in these times, farming alone can be a joyful companion for city dwellers.
A house that gained a view
When Abdus Salam built this house four decades ago, Hatirjheel had no glamour; the house was tucked away and hard to reach. After the huge project transformed Hatirjheel, the house gained in every way, and the rooftop farm adds extra beauty. Abdus Salam's son and daughter-in-law, both doctors, have taken up hobby farming.
The seedling problem
Continuing their elders' farming, they have realised that it holds many of life's rewards. But they too say the biggest challenge for rooftop farming today is the supply of correct, quality seedlings. They want government action to solve this and say all inputs for ventures like rooftop farming should be easily available.
