A three-month clean-up and mosquito-control programme against dengue began in Gopalganj on Sunday afternoon, organised by the district council at Gopalganj Medical College Hospital as part of the nationwide dengue prevention and cleanliness drive for 2026.

The chief guest, Md Azmul Haque, director of the Local Government Division and additional divisional commissioner of Dhaka, told reporters that dengue mosquitoes, which once bit only by day, now bite at night too, and breed not only in clean water but in dirty water as well, so everyone must be more careful.

After the event Haque and district council administrator Sharif Rafiq Uzzaman joined more than 50 workers clearing undergrowth and rubbish from the medical college, the nursing institute and the district council grounds.

Killing mosquitoes alone is not enough, Haque said; awareness has to grow, with wide campaigns to keep homes, offices and their surroundings clean, and the spread of dengue can be stopped if everyone takes responsibility.

Sharif Rafiq Uzzaman said the clean-up would run across the district for the next three months, and urged residents to keep their homes and workplaces clean.
