Gono University Career Development Club (GBCDC) organised a tree-planting programme to help keep Bangladesh's environment in balance. The university's vice-chancellor, Professor Dr Md Abul Hossain, inaugurated the programme at noon on 9 July. Banyan and fruit trees were planted at various spots on the campus.

The organisation has set out to plant 1,000 trees this year. At first it planted about 100 trees of 15 species: banyan, palmyra palm, neem, olive, amla, jam, gab, chalta, bilimbi, mango, guava, tamarind, latkan, sapodilla and betel nut.

Vice-chancellor Professor Dr Md Abul Hossain said: "The temperature of the environment is rising day by day. Trees lower the temperature, increase moisture in the air and prevent soil erosion. So there is no alternative to planting trees to protect the environment. GBCDC has taken up a tree-planting programme to protect the environment, and I applaud their initiative."

GBCDC organising secretary Nasim said: "Our programme aims at greening. To create an environment fit for people to live in, we have set out to plant 1,000 trees this year. To begin with, about 100 trees are being planted."

Present at the inauguration were treasurer Professor Md Sirajul Islam; Md Abu Harez, controller of examinations and president of the Deans' Committee; teachers of various departments; Hasib Mir, former general secretary and adviser of the Gono University Journalists' Association; GBCDC's lead mentor; and members of the organisation.
