A young man named Payel Ali, 22, has died after being bitten by a snake while asleep in Gomostapur, Chapainawabganj.

The incident happened on the night of Monday, 27 May, in Adda-Jugi Bari village of the upazila. He was declared dead at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) at around 9am on Tuesday, 28 May.

Payel Ali was the son of Abdus Salam of the Adda-Jugi Bari area of Gomostapur upazila.

Locals said Payel was sleeping in his room at night when he suddenly screamed. Those who went in found a venomous snake on his bed. His relatives quickly took him to a kabiraj, a traditional healer. When his condition worsened, he was taken to the upazila health complex, and in the morning the doctor on duty referred him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where he died while under treatment, locals said.

Dr Zahid, officer in charge of the RMCH emergency department, gave a different account to Jagonews24. He said a venomous snake bit Payel at night and his relatives took him to a kabiraj, and that his family brought him to the hospital already dead at around 9am.
