Goat rearing is given special importance in the rural economy because it is the main source of income for many people. Farmers can also keep chickens alongside their goats, which lowers costs and raises profits. Rearing chickens with goats can halve costs while also providing eggs and chicken meat.
A shared, divided shed
A special shed must be built to house chickens and goats together. It should be divided in two by an iron mesh in the middle, with a small door for the chickens to come out. When you take the goats out to graze or go into the shed to clean it, open the small mesh gate. The chickens will then move into the goats' side and eagerly eat the leftovers in the goat shed.
Lower feed costs
Goats are given green leaves such as neem, jackfruit and guava, along with fodder with medicinal properties that protects them from many serious diseases. The chickens eat the fodder the goats leave behind. A chicken eats about 110-130 grams of grain a day, and rearing chickens and goats together cuts the chickens' feed by 30-40 grams.
Compost from goat dung and droppings
If you rear chickens with goats on one acre of land, you can make compost. Farmers can produce organic fertiliser from goat dung and chicken droppings, and can also use this compost to grow algae with good protein.
