On the roof of a seven-storey garment factory beside the Shitalakshya river in Narayanganj, a rich rooftop farm has grown. Full of hundreds of kinds of local and foreign fruit, flowers and crops, it feeds the mind and also meets daily nutritional needs.
A village above the factory
Bornali Garments' seven-storey building stands on the bank of the Shitalakshya. Like any garment factory, it is a busy workplace of hundreds of workers. On its roof is a small village of fruit, flowers and crops, built up day by day by the owner, Harun or Rashid, out of love for soil and crops.
From hobby to commercial farm
There are most fruits of every season, along with flowers for beauty and fragrance. The owner says he set up the rooftop farm as a hobby, but it has become a commercial farm.
The roofs of the country's countless garment factories could become such creative farming spaces, and this entrepreneur understands their many benefits.
