Miscreants have cut down and destroyed the banana plants on two bighas of land belonging to three farmers in Chargoal village of Gangni upazila, Meherpur. The three farmers, Sohag Sardar, Imrul and Amjad, were growing bananas together.

The plants were destroyed overnight on Friday, 17 February, according to the report.

Sohag Sardar told Jagonews that the three of them farm 40 bighas together, three and a half of them under banana. The plants had been tended with fertiliser, irrigation and pesticide, and the bunches were nearly ripe. Under cover of darkness the miscreants cut the plants down, and in the morning farmers in the field told them what had happened. Banana on two bighas was destroyed, causing a loss of at least Tk 4 lakh, he said.

The affected farmers and local people have called on the administration to step in so that nothing like this happens again in the village's fields.

Gangni police station officer-in-charge Tajul Islam said police were looking into the matter and legal action would be taken if anyone filed a complaint.
