Should You Chew Your Fruit or Drink It as Juice?

Chewing whole fruit gives more nutrition than drinking it as juice, because juicing destroys much of the fibre, according to doctors.

Eating fruit regularly is essential to staying healthy. Eating seasonal fruit in particular boosts the body's immunity, and regular fruit also helps keep your weight in check. But how should you eat it: chewed, or as juice?

According to doctors, chewing fruit gives more nutrition than drinking its juice. Fruit, especially the skin and outer parts, contains plenty of fibre, which is good for health.

Juicing destroys the fibre, so its benefits are lost. Try to chew your fruit instead, so that all of its nutrients reach your body.

The skins of many fruits are also highly nutritious, so it is better to eat those fruits with the skin on rather than throwing it away. But people with stomach problems are better off removing the skin.

People with dental problems or who find chewing difficult can have fruit as juice, and children can be given fruit juice too. But as a child grows older, make sure to get them into the habit of chewing fruit.

Avoid packaged fruit juice. Buy fruit from the shop, wash it well and eat it. People with acidity should never eat fruit on an empty stomach; it is important to eat a little something before eating fruit.
