Floods may develop in low-lying areas of four districts over the next seven days, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre has said. Over the same period, the flood situation already under way in one district could worsen.

The information was given on 30 April in the centre's seven-day conceptual forecast on flash floods in the north-east.

The forecast says rainfall above normal may occur in the haor basin of the north-east and the upstream areas from 30 April to 7 May, with a total of 150 to 350 millimetres of rain likely over the period.

As a result, water levels may rise in the main rivers, including the Surma-Kushiyara, Dhanu-Baulai and Bhugai-Kangsha. This could worsen the flood situation in low-lying areas next to the haors in Netrokona district and cause fresh flooding in low-lying areas of Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar and Habiganj districts.

However, the forecast says that if rainfall eases towards the end of the week, river levels may fall below the pre-monsoon danger level and the flood situation may improve.

The centre also said that heavy rain since 27 April had pushed the Sugai-Kangsha, Someshwari, Mathra and Sutang rivers above the pre-monsoon danger level, leaving a flood situation in the haor areas of Netrokona and Habiganj.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department and global weather agencies, rainfall above normal has been observed over the past seven days in the north-eastern haor basin and adjoining upstream areas.
