Five Foods That Can Cause Trouble When Eaten With Rice

Rice gives energy, but eating it with certain foods such as roti, potatoes, fruit, corn or tea may cause health problems.

Fruits

Bengalis cannot go a single day without rice. Rice is very good for keeping the body healthy, and it is rich in carbohydrates, which boost the body's energy.

But eating too much rice is not good, as it raises the chance of putting on weight. Some foods can also cause trouble when eaten with rice. Here are the foods you should not eat with rice.

Roti

Many people eat rice and roti together to balance fibre and carbohydrates, but this can be harmful to health. Both rice and roti have a high glycaemic index, so eating them together can cause gastric problems.

Potato

Everyone likes mashed, fried or curried potato with rice, but the two should not be eaten together. Nutrition science says eating potatoes with rice has some unhealthy aspects: both are high in calories, which raises the chance of weight gain.

Fruit

Rather than with rice, many people eat fruit right after a rice meal. Be careful here: eating fruit with rice can cause digestive problems, and the risk is higher still with unripe fruit. So eat fruit half an hour after a rice meal rather than straight away.

Corn

As with potato, corn should not be eaten with rice. It is high in starch, which is not very good for the body, and eating it together with the calories and starch in rice increases the risk of gaining weight.

Tea

Do not drink tea straight after eating rice; give up this habit to keep your stomach healthy. The tannin in tea reacts with calories to produce gas, so it is important to be careful to avoid the risk.
