A fishing cat has been caught in a trap at Doloipara on the outskirts of Sylhet city. The animal was caught in a trap set for foxes, and curious people crowded in from the morning of Saturday, 25 December, when the news spread.
It was learnt that local indigenous leader Gouranga Patra contacted environmental activists in Sylhet city. Abdul Karim Kim, general secretary of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA), Sylhet, then informed Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, divisional officer of the Wildlife Conservation Division, so the fishing cat could be released. He sent a Forest Department rescue team on Saturday afternoon.
Trap set for a fox
Abdul Karim Kim said a fox had been eating the chickens at Durga Babu's house in Doloipara village on the outskirts of Sylhet, so people at the house set a trap in an iron cage to catch it. A fishing cat was caught in the trap set on Friday night. On receiving the news, the cat was rescued through a senior Forest Department official and released.
Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, divisional officer of the Wildlife Conservation Division, told Jagonews that the cat was released in the Forest Department's Khadim National Park around dusk on Saturday.
