Fish and meat prices have climbed in Dhaka's markets. Over the past two weeks fish has risen by Tk 50-100 a kg, and beef by Tk 50 to Tk 800 a kg, Banglanews found on Tuesday (27 October) at Nayabazar, Raysaheb Bazar and Dhupkhola Math Bazar. Eggs, though, have eased.
Tilapia sells at Tk 250-260 a kg, up from Tk 200-220. Pangas is Tk 220-230 (was 200-220), rui and katla Tk 280-450 (was 250-380), and shrimp Tk 1,000-1,200 (was 800-950). Pabda costs Tk 350-600, tengra Tk 700, air Tk 800-1,400, chital Tk 700-1,000 and bele Tk 700-1,200 a kg. Prices depend on size, species and whether the fish is alive, and differ by Tk 10-20 a kg between markets.
Broiler chicken is Tk 180-190 a kg, against Tk 170-180 a fortnight ago. Sonali chicken is Tk 320-350 (Tk 300-310 last month) and deshi chicken Tk 750-800 (was 650-750). Beef is Tk 800 a kg and boneless Tk 850-900; goat meat is Tk 1,200-1,350.
Eggs offer some relief. Sohrab Hossain, an egg seller at Raysaheb Bazar, said farm eggs are now Tk 45 a hali (four), down from Tk 50 a week ago. Duck eggs fell from Tk 70 to Tk 60 a hali, and deshi chicken eggs from Tk 85-90 to Tk 70.
Sellers point to the wholesale depots and cattle markets. Md Sumon, a fish seller at Nayabazar, said he pays Tk 30-50 a kg more at the depot. Md Ramzan, a beef seller at Raysaheb Bazar, said fewer cattle are reaching the haats, and fattening feed means less meat for a cow's weight. Ruhul Amin, a chicken seller at Dhupkhola, said sales have dropped since prices rose two weeks ago.
Shopper Md Monir Hossain at Nayabazar said it should be checked whether traders used the fuel price rise as an excuse to push prices up. S M Nazer Hossain, vice-president of the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB), urged the monitoring agencies to be stricter. Abdul Jabbar Mondal, assistant director of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection, said broiler prices have begun to fall since monitoring was stepped up.
