Bangladesh has no fertiliser shortage and stocks are ample against demand, the parliamentary standing committee on the Ministry of Agriculture said on Monday. If the factories can run at full capacity, the committee added, the country could one day export surplus fertiliser after meeting its own needs.
The remarks came at the committee's second meeting in the Thirteenth Parliament, held at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on 26 October with its chairman, Md Shahadat Hossain, presiding. He said the artificial crisis that had arisen around fertiliser distribution had been resolved through quick action.
On a proposal from member Md Mostafizur Rahman, the committee decided to inspect fertiliser distribution, stocks and management on the ground, along with illegal hoarding and marketing. A three-member team led by Mostafizur Rahman, with Md Rokon Uddin Babul and Mosa. Sabira Sultana, will identify the problems and recommend remedies.
The committee also took up complaints of irregularities in appointing fertiliser dealers. Where dealership contracts have not yet been signed, it asked that they be held until the complaints are settled; where they have been signed, it asked for the complaints to be investigated properly and action taken.
Agriculture Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid attended, as did committee members Md Shahidul Islam, Md Mostafizur Rahman, Md Rokon Uddin Babul, Md Mujibur Rahman Chowdhury, Mosa. Sabira Sultana and Md Golam Rasul.
