In the Western world, new designs of clothing come out every season – winter, summer and autumn. A dress that was worn to the knee last season is replaced a few months later by an ankle-length gown, fuller or narrower, that takes the market by storm.
Every season you, too, head to glittering shopping malls to buy it. Suddenly clothes of one particular colour start selling fast – just as in Bangladesh, where people rush to the markets for clothes in certain colours during festival seasons.
But for the rest of the year the garment lies unworn, and a few months later it becomes last season's outfit.
Designers and retailers are always competing to offer something brand new, and all of us take part in that competition. Many of us want praise for wearing new clothes all the time. But the environment is paying a heavy price for it.
How does fashion harm the environment?
The fashion industry produces huge amounts of greenhouse gases. In Britain, clothing retailers and people who follow the latest trends are being criticised for their part in harming the environment.
An environment committee of the House of Commons in Britain says that buying new clothes every season just to stay fashionable, even when they are not needed, means a great deal of clothing is thrown away within a year or even a few months.
